Bengali Version – Alo Chhaya Dola
Hindi Version – Pavan Diwani Na Maani – Dr. Vidya (1962)
One of my many many most favorite songs of Dada Burman (Sachin Dev Burman) !!! There are so many things to write about this song … attempted just a few –
1) Like many of his Bengali compositions that Dada Burman inherited in Hindi Films, this song is no exception. The original composition Alo Chhaya Dola rendered by none other than Dada Burman himself showcases his command over classical music.
2) This song is composed in Raag Bageshri-Bahar. Superb combination of notes where Bageshri notes are in Poorvang (पूर्वांग) and Bahar takes over in Uttarang (उत्तरांग). The combination of Komal and Shudhha Nishad (नी) is like Icing on the cake.
3) M0, the intro music starts with pakhwaj with a superb blend of Sitar and violins and lands on a pure Dadara with beautiful Santoor notes! The starting beat (सम) hits so well on “टा” after the mukhda line every time “उडावे मोरा घुंगटा”.
4) You will notice amazing tabla patterns played by Marutirao Keerji (most likely). In particular “तू ना” बोल in 12 beat rhythm (एकताल) sounds so good.
5) Lata didi has portrayed her strong command on Hindusthani Classical Music so well throughout this song! It’s such a bliss to hear हरकत, मुरकत! Especially to note are – हमारी from उलझी लट हमारी, मोरी from अखियां तरसे मोरी, (second time) पाउं from धरने नही पाउं and the last aalap after “घुंगटा” are simply mesmerizing. Especially for (second time) पाउं from धरने नही पाउं I can bet that you would not shy saying “ओहोहो, क्या बात है” 😇
6) Sometimes I really wonder what if Lata didi would have not joined the film music and have progressed as a Pure Classical singer what would have been better! Very tough to choose as it’s always difficult to choose from 2 supreme voices ! Many other renditions of Lata didi e.g. “मनमोहना बडे झूटे”, “प्रीतम दरस दिखावो” the list goes on … all are purest classical renditions !!
7) Coming to the picturization of this song, Vaijayantimala portrays her traditional Hindustani dancing so well! This song is a treat to dancers. So Graceful !! From the intro piece to Coda (end music) …
8] This song ends with typical Naushad Saab style classical songs from hindi Films. This song has a long coda with combination of tabla/pakhwaj and rhythms increasing slowly and Vaijayantimala at their best !!
And I am sure this list will go on!!
