Surprised ??? 🙂 Thought to share a Bengali version this time.. I love it more than Hindi..trust me … once you hear it .. you would want to hear it more and more even than Hindi one ….
One of my many many most favorite songs of Panchamda!!! There are so many things to write about this song … attempted just a few –
1) Bengali version came out first in 1970 in an album called “Sonar Juti / সোনার জুটি” i.e. The Golden Pair. Hindi version was in 1981 in the movie Angoor however absolutely no doubt that both the versions are such a treat to ears! Both versions are sung by Ashatai so marvelously!! I personally like Bengali version more as I believe it goes more in a semi-classical way than Hindi one.
2) This song is based on Raag Yaman and it’s like a milestone to study for classical music learners be it a pure Aalap in first stanza in Bengali version or sargam in Hindi one. So many variations, हरकत, मुरकत, गमक, मींड … just to quote some … “घुंगरू / ঘুঙারও”, “की / কী ” multiple times through out song , “ढोले जाय / ঢোলে যায় ” in first stanza , “जोले जाय / জলে যায়”, “बाती जोलीछे जोल्शाघोरे / বাতি জ্বলেছে জলসাঘরে” in second stanza etc.
3) By the way, this aalap in first stanza reminds me of another gem sung by Ashatai in Marathi movie “महानंदा” … yes you guessed it right .. the song is “मागे उभा मंगेश ..” Quite a few times , after aalap I seemlessly switch to sing “जटाजूट माथ्यावरी …” 🙂
4) Even though it’s like a classical based song, Panchamda has used Base Guitar so skillfully without disturbing its melody and it’s classical soul! You can hear the vibraphone very dominantly in Bengali version as well!! Hats off to Panchamda !
5) Ashatai is such a versatile singer. I always feel that presenting a classical heavy song in a simple not so sounding classical way is so much difficult than other way round and Ashatai has sung so many such amazing songs which are classical based but yet feel light weight.
6) If you watch Dipti Naval’s superb performance presenting this song on screen in Hindi Version in Movie – Angoor, you will notice that before the first stanza line (“बीते हुए मौसम की”) starts, on the starting beat (सम), along with vibraphone notes her glasses fall down at the exact time! What a timing ! 🙂
7) Hindi version also has some great variations by Aashatai … just to quote a few – बावरा, निशानी, क्या, रोज रोज, होगा कोई (2nd time), डाली etc.
And I am sure this list will go on !!
Nice post, Anand. This is also one of my favorite Ashaji's song. Great composition. In the recent past I have listened to many Bengali songs from SD and RD. Most compositions are superb except for the fact that all of them were used in Hindi as well, this at least I did not find lot of Hindi-only compositions from the father-son duo. In contrast, Hemant kumar could come up with different compositions for most of his Bengali and Hindi songs. I could be wrong here but something that I observed. My respect for Hemant da gone up multi level after listening to his Bengali songs.

I agree that quite a few were used in Hindi from Bengali or vice versa. However there are a lots of gem songs composed in Hindi only. Will gather and share those.
I listened to both songs by because of this blog. Enjoyed both a lot. And then my personal favourite "Mage ubha Mangesh". Each is a masterpiece on its own.
